Loss of the London

Synopsis: A brief description of the loss of the SS London in 1866.

The sea ran high, the winds were wild,.
As thro' the waves the London toiled,
Each lip was blanched, and terror there,
Filled e'en the bravest heart with care ;
But on she passed through storm and rain,
And tried to conquer, but in vain ;
For with two hundred souls or more,
The London sank near a foreign shore.

The scene was harrowing, children pressed
Against each loving mother's breast,
And musing asked the reason why
The tears stood in each parent's eye.
 The Captain said all hope was gone,
And each one prayed "Thy will be done."
And with two hundred souls or more,
The London sank near a foreign shore.

One man was there who played his part,
As one who had a Lion's heart ;
Brooke was the heroic actor's name,
And history shall record his fame;
He worked until all hope was gone,
Then calmly paced the deck alone,
And with two hundred souls or more,
The London sank near a foreign shore.
