A port on the south bank of the Clyde west of Glasgow. Used by river boats and seagoing steam boats that were too large to navigate upstream toward Glasgow. It was connected to Glasgow by railway in 1841

Given that "All their discourse was about weaving" an engine driver in this context probably means a man who tended the engine that powered the looms rather than a locomotive driver.

It seems that destitute weavers travelled considerable distances in their search for alms. William Cobbett encountered a party of them in Wiltshire in 1826 "here are…throughout this country, weavers from the North, singing about the towns ballads of Distress! …The landlord at Heytesbury told me that people that could afford it generally gave them something" William Cobbett, Rural Rides 31st August 1826 .P363
