Variant Set 011

Variant of The Railway by Andrew Park

Set Members:     Bar146 and 561

Bar146 ~ Greenock Railway is a humorous description of steam boat passengers transferring to a train. It was printed under the title The Railway in Chamber's Edinburgh Journal 6th April 1844, page 224 which cites its source as Park's Songs for All Seasons, printed in Glasgow in 1843. The song was printed again in The Poetical Works of Andrew Park in 1854 where it is called The Greenock Railway (ref: The Poetical Works of Andrew Park London: David Bogue, 1854, page 313). The song is set to the King of the Cannibal Islands

Bar561 ~ The Railway, is modelled on Parks’ song. It was printed in the West Somerset Free Press on 5th April 1862; eight years after the original appeared. Bar561 is shorter and omits the verse in the original that makes the most obvious references to ferry boats. Since it is called The Railway the source of the original was probably either Park's Songs for All Seasons, or Chamber's Edinburgh Journal. No tune is given; indeed the full title states that it is a poem written to celebrate the opening of the West Somerset Railway.
