[Note 146.1] King of the Cannibal Islands was a very popular tune. It is used for 89 entries in the Roud Index.

[Note 146.2] "TWAS on a Monday morning soon, As I lay snoring at Dunoon":- The connection between the steamers and the railway was used for both pleasure (see note 5) and business (see note 11)

[Note 146.4] "The steam was up" :- Means that the engine was at operational pressure; i.e. the ship was ready to depart.

[Note 146.3] "To catch the Greenock Railway.":- The Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway was created to provide train services between Greenock and Glasgow and opened on 31 March 1841

[Note 146.5] "Stood all the Sunday-watering men":- According to Robertson, [ref. The Origins of the Scottish Railway System 1722-1844] the year that the line was opened "the Monday morning trains on the Glasgow to Greenock route were packed with seabathing folk who had gone down to Dunoon on Saturday afternoon". It might also be a reference to the business men mentioned in note 11.
