The OED says that using "Weekend" to mean a recreational break away from home first came into use in 1901 so it was a fashionable new phrase when the song was written.

Before refreshments were sold aboard trains, longer stops were scheduled to allow passengers to buy food and drink. The brevity of the stops was the subject of much criticism. See also bar326~Railway Bell

By the time Annitsford Station was opened it was common for railways stations to be furnished with toilets but these were usually only for men

The implication is that passengers at the old Dudley station were forced to cross the line to reach the platforms.

On 8th July 1878 Dudley station was closed and replaced with a second station 352 yards to the south called Annitsford to avoid confusion with another Dudley in the Midlands.
