"Patent car" probably originates in Goldsworthy Gurney's steam coach which Gurney fraudulently claimed was by "Royal Patent" (see bar267 New Invented Steam Carriage). The Birmingham Steam coach company was formed in 1835 using steam coaches designed and patented by William Church. Church's coaches did appear on the roads of Birmingham but failed in their attempts to reach London (ii).

When this song was written the pneumatic tyre was still a relative novelty. Dunlop invented the pneumatic bicycle tyre in 1888 and André Michelin began to develop pneumatic tyres for motor cars in 1895

Any old iron was popular Music Hall song first recorded by Harry Champion in 1911 (Roud V36096) It was supposedly the call of scrap dealers collecting wares in residential areas.
