The burning of small lumps of coal in an inefficient boiler would certainly account for the "volumes of pitchy smoke" referred to later in the piece. Early steam boats had very tall funnels   (see the engraving of 'Ariadne' in [Note034.1]) intended to direct the smoke and sparks away from the vessel and its occupants.
