Liverpool
A major port at the mouth of the river Mersey. Used by the first steam ships plying the Irish Sea and the West coast of Scotland. Terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened in 1830. The first fully fledged steam steam railway to carry passengers and goods. Clarence Dock opened in 1830 was built to cater for the burgeoning steam ship traffic. Liverpool became a major port in the transatlantic "liners"
