A station named Hartlepool West was opened on 9 February 1841 [i] In 1842 the Grand Junction Railway moved its locomotive works to Crewe and built the town to house the workforce and company management. [ii]

Railway construction demanded vast quantities of bricks. Railway contractors concentrated Irish navvies around bridges and tunnles in an effort to avoid the confrontatins between them and the English (See also Bar524~The Irish Harvestmen's Triumph)
