John Bull's Railway Station

A political allegory in support of Tariff Reform with Joseph Chamberlain as the hero.

There is a railway station known as "England" on the map
The busiest of stations ever seen
But almost all the goods there bear this legend on the wrap
"made on the continent" what fools we've been [Note 196.1]
The platforms and the warehouses are full of monster crates
Sent to us by the German and the Dane
And ev'rything you see there comes in free from foreign States
And this is what is seen on ev'ry train
Germany is the porter, Austria is the guard
Belgium is the stoker and they all work hard.
To capture the trade of England together they will pull
And these are nations who will ruin the trade of Old John Bull

Just look around and what a sight for British eyes to see !
No end of workmen out of work you trace.
And trade that once was theirs, alas! Has gone across the sea
And sadness reigns on every Briton's face.
The men who hate us most are favoured, as for years they've been;
Their goods can come into our country free;
But every British article that we send out abroad
Taxed right up to the hilt is sure to be. Whilst, ---
Germany is the porter, Austria is the guard
Belgium is the stoker and they all work hard.
To capture the trade of England together they will pull
And these are nations who will ruin the trade of Old John Bull

What is that great commotion on yon platform over there,
Where British throats are cheering loud and long?
Another train has just come in, - it makes the Powers stare, [Note 196.2]
The Driver wears an orchid, firm and strong. [Note 196.3]
The train is full of British goods - the stokers and the guard
Are working for the prize that must be won, -
"Protection" for our Colonies and for our working men; [Note 196.4]
On British Lines at last the train is run. And---
Canada is  the Porter, Australia is the Guard,
Sandy and Pat are Stokers and they all work hard. [Note 196.5]
The name of the train it is "Empire" and every car is full;
For "Joseph" drives the engine now for Old John Bull.
