Songs (or poems) for which no reliable printed source has been found and which seem to have been passed from singer to singer 'by word of mouth'. These songs are often called 'traditional folk songs' although 'folk' singers often sang Music Hall songs and Parlour Ballads as well as pieces the style and content of which would be classed as folk song. This website has avoided the use of the term 'folk song'.
