[Note 416.1]

The cover depicts several people moving around on various steam-powered vehicles. A boy on steam-powered wheels chases a mechanical steam-powered cat chasing a mouse, and three mechanical steam-powered people (robots) perform tasks, such as inventorying coal and carrying pails. A skin-and-bones carriage driver looks on, one horse dead and the other close to death. A steam-powered train is labelled "Patent safety, neck or nothing, London to Paris in 2 hours." A building with coal in front has a sign reading "Depot No. four for the calorific regenerator." In the distance are steamboats and a train with tracks going to the moon, who looks worried. Flying above is an "Eagle" airship* (designed by the Comte de Lennox in 1834). Signed "J.B."
