An article in the Cheshire Observer - Saturday 27 August 1881 p7 entitled NEW BRIGHTON AS A WATERING PLACE reported "Not far off stands the famous Perch Rock Battery, fully mounted with a proper complement of big guns, and the appropriate number of real live soldiers. To this object most of the visitors, both young and old, find their way".

A photograph taken in the 1880s and reproduced on the History of Wallasey website shows lady visitors sitting near the guns in the Perch Rock Battery.
