This text takes its inspiration from Kipling’s poem the Absent-Minded Beggar written to help raise funds to support soldiers going to the Boer War and their dependants. The poem was first published in the Daily Mail in November 1899 it was an immediate success and was recited in music halls to great acclaim. It was soon set to music by Sir Arthur Sullivan and was first performed as a song in November 1899. [Ref :]
