The Oxford Companion to British Railway History, p387]. This facsimile of a ticket issued by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway says at the bottom "Notice - No Gratuity allowed to be taken by any Guard, Porter, or other Servant of the Company". Gratuities were an important source of income to Porters.
