The Huddersfield Chronicle of 6th June 1891 p8 reported that the tram driver

“drew up on the ‘pass- by’, as the double line is technically called, and was waiting there when the engine suddenly became enveloped in flame, and there was a loud report The engine and car at once parted. The engine swerved round to the right running transversely across the line towards the neighbouring houses, and the shock started the car at a rapid rate back along the line towards Huddersfield"
